"We are delighted to announce the launch of the Beverage Association of Sri Lanka..."

Leading beverage companies in Sri Lanka have come together for the first time in the history of the sector to form The Beverage Association of Sri Lanka (BAOSL). The association has been formed with the aim of providing a vital platform for the sector, whilst championing the contribution of its members towards the country’s economic sustainability. The BAOSL currently consists of Ceylon Cold Stores PLC (manufacturer and marketer of Elephant House Beverages), Coca-Cola BeveragesSri Lanka Limited and Varun Beverages Lanka Limited (the manufacturer and marketer of Pepsi Cola Inc beverages).

Founder Members BAOSL
Founder Members BAOSL
BAOSL is expected to raise the profile of a sector that has been a key contributor to the national economy over the years. Mr. Jit Guneratne, Chairman of the BAOSL commented: “We are delighted to announce the launch of the Beverage Association of Sri Lanka. It is heartening to see all the beverage firms forge a common bond and unite to form the association which will strengthen the voice of the sector and accord the sector its due status. The beverage sector is a valuable employment generator, heavy investor in technology and retail network development, and an environmentally conscious entity. We are confident that the formation of this body will provide a strong platform for the industry and its players who remain closely engaged with all stakeholders.”

It is pertinent to note that the sector has made heavy capital investments in machinery and technology over the decades. The industry is a key contributor to the national exchequer and thereby to the economic development of the country. The beverage industry provides employment to nearly 1,500 individuals who are directly employed by these companies whilst simultaneously creating indirect employment for 3,000 more. Moreover, member companies are responsible for providing trading opportunities to over 75,000 retailers. The BAOSL will engage with stakeholders of the sector and bring to light the contribution made by the industry, for example, in ensuring proper storage and quality of beverages, through the provision of aids such as coolers and racks.

Further, Mr. Guneratne added: “The BAOSL will play the role of mentor and guide for the industry and ensure compliance and quality at all times. The convergence of leading companies on the BAOSL platform will be of infinite help in making representations to the government authorities on behalf of the industry, members of which were fending for themselves individually in the past. United as one body, the sector can highlight its various achievements. The body will also facilitate the framing, development and dissemination of best practices in order to continue to produce safe and healthy non-alcoholic beverages to consumers and to pro-actively interact with the government, various regulatory agencies, other apex industry associations and bodies in the formulation of policies and rules that support whilst promoting and protecting the interests of the non-alcoholic beverage industry. BAOSL members have focused on Education, Water Conservation, Uplifting the Livelihood of Farmers and Sports as part of their sustainability initiatives in the past. We are excited about the fact that the BAOSL could prove to be the springboard for shared action amongst its member community.”

Statistics will show that the sector has been instrumental in introducing advanced machinery coupled with global best practices in manufacturing, supply chain management and distribution, which have enhanced the profile of the country’s retail sector by leaps and bounds.

The BAOSL has been established with the intention being the catalyst for the sector, encouraging adherence and greater effort on the part of members. Also, this association will strive to provide a common platform to share and exchange knowledge and information with regard to best practices and to develop, adopt and enforce a voluntary code of conduct among its members relating to manufacture, bottling, marketing, distribution and sale of non-alcoholic beverages in Sri Lanka. A guiding principle of the BAOSL is to promote a healthy lifestyle in the country.

FIFTY MILLION COCA-COLA FANS ON FACEBOOK

50 Millionth Facebook User “Likes” Coca-Cola

As 50 Millionth Facebook User “Likes” Coca-Cola, Brand Announces Plan to Support Online Community in Making the World Happier

If you could rally 50 million of your friends to make the world a happier place, what kind of results do you think you could achieve?  Today Coca-Cola announced plans to find out as the 50 millionth Facebook user “Liked” the brand’s page.  By harnessing the collective input of its fan base on Facebook, Coca-Cola will be a catalyst in identifying simple ways to make the world a happier place.
“Throughout its history Coca-Cola has always had a role in bringing simple moments of happiness to people around the world every day,” said Joe Tripodi, chief marketing and commercial leadership officer, The Coca-Cola Company.  “Today we have an engaged global community more than 50 million strong connected through Facebook.  This provides an opportunity to engage our most supportive and enthusiastic fans in a quest to find ways to make the world a happier place.”

Coca-Cola will identify individuals developing ideas  that enable people to become more active, give to others, be social or engage in other activities associated with increased happiness.  These creators will then collaborate with Coca-Cola and its Facebook community to develop ideas that help spread happiness around the world.

Through a new application on Coca-Cola’s Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/cocacola, fans can declare their commitment to help spread happiness and be a part of this global effort at http://CokeURL.com/50MM.

Once registered, fans will be invited to directly participate by influencing and shaping the ideas and rallying the larger community behind a social innovation.  The Coca-Cola Company will support the selected concept and visionary behind the idea by providing access to teams that will help propel their solution.  The ultimate outcome, to be piloted in 2013, could be a new invention, a cause or even a social application – something that can harness the connectivity of the Facebook community to spread happiness around the world.

“Coca-Cola understands the value of communicating directly with its most ardent supporters in an authentic way that helps make the world more open and connected,” said Sheryl Sandberg, chief operating officer, Facebook.  “This new program is the next step in fan culture and we are glad to support Coca-Cola in this effort.”

Coca-Cola will share further details about the selection of participants, timelines and concepts identified as the program progresses in coming weeks.

The Coca-Cola Facebook Page was not created by the Company but by two fans of the brand – Dusty Sorg and Michael Jedrzejewski.  In August 2008, Dusty and Michael were looking for a fan page on Facebook to share their passion for Coca-Cola and, not finding one that met their idea of a great page, created their own.  From that beginning, The Coca-Cola Facebook Page has grown to become the largest brand page on Facebook.

SriLankan Airlines celebrates 33rd anniversary

SriLankan Airlines Turns 33...

The national carrier of Sri Lanka, SriLankan Airlines celebrates its 33rd anniversary this month. This milestone will be marked with religious ceremonies for the staff commencing from the first week of September.

The life journey of the airline has been fascinating, checked with victories and surviving turmoil during the country’s three decade long civil war which claimed half of its fleet during the airport attack in 2001, the global recession and stifling competition in what is a mature, yet dynamic industry.

SriLankan took flight on September 1, 1979 as Air Lanka, its former name, with a humble fleet of two leased Boeing 707-300B jetliners. Air Lanka’s preliminary route network spanned destinations such as, Frankfurt; London; Paris; Bangkok; Singapore; Kuala Lumpur; Bahrain; Dubai; Male; Mumbai and Chennai. In 1994 Air Lanka celebrated its 15th anniversary by being the first carrier in Asia to introduce Airbus A340 aircraft to its fleet. Three brand new A340s would soon have the airline operating long-haul services previously not possible to several of its destinations. Four years later, a ten year deal forged with Dubai-based Emirates would have Air Lanka soaring to new heights, under its new moniker – SriLankan Airlines.

Today, SriLankan’s fleet has expanded to 21 Airbus A320, A330 and A340 aircraft, with some being brand new, delivered just this year and its network extends to 58 destinations in 33 countries in Europe; North America; Canada; Australia; Far East; Middle East and the Indian Sub-Continent.

The airline has cemented a firm reputation worldwide for its service, comfort, safety and reliability, notching many enviable industry awards along the way. These awards include the, World’s Friendliest Cabin Staff by Skytrax; Best Airline in South Asia from Travel Trade Gazette; World’s Most Reliable Operator of Airbus A330s and A340s by Airbus Industrie and the Etihad Global Excellence Award for Best Regional Caterer.

In 2011, the airline carried over three million passengers, and the numbers indicate a growth for 2012, which is in line with the thriving tourism industry. The first half of this year saw a 27 percent growth in the number of passengers that travelled on SriLankan, over last year’s first half.

The airline is also in a phase of undertaking massive product enhancements starting with its fleet, with the acquisition of brand new A320s and the refurbishment of existing A330 and A340 aircraft, incorporating plush leather interior, flat bed seats on Business Class and state-of-the-art IMS Rave entertainment systems.

In line with modern trends in global air travel, SriLankan now offers its Business Class passengers a quick check-in facility with the ‘Silk Route’ service at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

SriLankan is also looking at advancing in other areas of aviation technology. In the last month, the airline became the first in Asia to replace bulky paper manuals used by pilots in the cockpit, with iPad Electronic Flight Bags (EFB).

The year brought on acclaim to the training arm of SriLankan, the International Aviation Academy (IAA), when it was recognised by the International Air Travel Association (IATA) as one of its ‘Top Ten’ Authorized Training Centres in South Asia. In August 2012, IAA opened its first overseas branch in Maldives.

In April 2012, SriLankan Engineering fortified its reputation as a reliable service provider in aircraft maintenance in the region, when it completed the 50th “C” Check for IndiGo– India’s largest low-fare carrier.

SriLankan Catering (SLC), a fully owned subsidiary of the airline, also expanded its services in the past 12 months. Semondu, its fine-dining restaurant, was opened in the historic Dutch Complex in December 2011.

In addition to these developments, the external environment looks promising for SriLankan, with the booming Indian and Far Eastern leisure traveller markets and Sri Lanka’s unique positioning in the world map as a hub in Asia, the airline will have some great opportunities to expand in the near future.
